Corgi Socks
Corgi Hosiery is an internationally renowned knitwear company based in south Wales. Established in 1892, Corgi specialises in woolen and cashmere socks, and knitwear. They balance 21st century technology with 120-year-old knitting machines and take pride in their reputation for high-quality products. In 1989, Corgi was awarded a coveted Royal Warrant by HRH The Prince of Wales. The company has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with the prince, having supplied him with its finest cashmere socks for a number of years.
What was the problem?
The challenge came in equipping the customer to function as efficiently as possible using modern IT and network technology in a building that was not designed with this in mind. Previous WIFI based infrastructure needed to be reviewed due to the challenges presented by the architecture of the building. The thickness of walls means that the WIFI was slow and temperamental. New infrastructure was needed that would solve connectivity problems, deliver organisational needs and be flexible to the needs of the modern workplace.
There were additional challenges presented by machinery on the factory floor. Noise, vibrations, and dirt from heavy-duty machinery needed to be taken into consideration.
Furthermore, redundant technologies needed to be removed and the new network and infrastructure installed without disrupting the operations and workforce of an international company, open every day.
What did we do?
Our engineers overhauled the cabling infrastructure, installing CAT 6 structured cabling throughout the building to allow for greater connectivity. In addition, the server was brought into a secure server room and all PCs were upgraded to the most up-to-date windows operating system. Basic housekeeping tasks were also performed on the PCs to improve the efficiency of operations.
We introduced IP-based CCTV with the latest managed POE switches to allow for flexibility, simplicity and ensuring security at all stages. Cameras were installed to cover factory floor and offices, as well as external blind spots, such as the delivery bay and Factory shop.
Latest Alcatel ruggedised IP DECT telephone system was also installed on the factory floor. This improved mobility of staff within the factory and provided communications which would not be hindered by the noise and vibrations from heavy machinery. By introducing IP-based telephone and CCTV systems we were able to consolidate voice, image, and data information into a single, easily managed network.
We removed technologies made redundant over time and through our streamlining of infrastructure and network. We were also able to improve network and infrastructure functionality whilst at the same time maintaining simplicity and reducing operating costs. Improved connectivity and IP convergence have prepared Corgi to operate efficiently and continue to thrive within a global market.
